TPE scientists led a review of characteristics and changes of glacial lakes and outburst floods across the world. To overcome data limitations for the object, they first extensively documented the global and regional distribution of glacial lakes, focusing on the physical aspects of glacial lakes and GLOFs in a warming world. Through synthesizing glacial lake and GLOF hazard data sets from most glaciated regions of the world, they assessed ongoing and projected changes in glacial lakes and the corresponding GLOF hazard and risk, before ending with research priorities.
Their studies found more than 3000 GLOFs from 850 to 2022 throughout the world and warned against possible increase in GLOFs frequency in most glaciated mountain regions with ongoing deglaciation and lake expansion under warming.
